I CAN RUN

I CAN RUN film clip featuring Waangenga Blanco from Bangarra Dance Theatre. The clip premiered at The Guardian.

Directed by Caroline Sundt-Wels & William Robertson.

"What’s amazing about Black Opal is the way all its many appealing little elements congeal into something groundbreaking and huge. It’s been put together to tell a story, but the record is a revelation specifically because of the considered, very visual way in which it goes about telling that story.

Most pop music these days is concerned with exhaustively examining the inner self, but not for some time have I heard a record that does this by stacking that inner world up against the external one in which we immediately live. In the harshness of the degrading external landscape Shining Bird devotes itself to on Black Opal, it’s not all that hard to see a reflection of some kind of universal condition. To have made that visible for anyone willing to listen is a major achievement."

BIGSOUND SHOWCASE

"Bringing that big-band rock sound to BIGSOUND, Shining Bird hurls their classically indie, yet distinctly Australian, melancholy-style rock tunes at punters congregating in the pits of The Brightside. Singing about riverbanks and bushfires, it was clear that Shining Bird’s Australian heritage informs and stylises their distinctive sound and, although reminiscent of classic Australian artists such as The Church and Nick Cave, it is truly unique in its own way. As Shining Bird’s set trucks along, the fellas become nothing short of entertaining with their progressive tunes and atmospheric guitar solos calling for some stand-on-speakers style antics and epic crescendos into beautiful chaos. Complete with an incredibly fitting alto sax player, mimicking and complimenting frontman Dane Taylor’s deep, brooding vocals, the seven-piece entice delegates and avid music lovers alike to enjoy their set." - Thanks theMusic.com.au - http://themusic.com.au/music/livereviews/2016/09/08/bigsound-festival-2016-night-one/

ROLLING STONE PREMIERE

http://rollingstoneaus.com/music/post/shining-bird-share-new-collage-clip-for-helluva-lot/3830

As previously noted, Shining Bird's latest single "Helluva Lot" wrestles its camouflaged critique of national identity from a playfully optimistic composition, revealing its intention amidst geographical references that span the full width of this great southern land.

The accompanying clip, created by surf cinematographer Dave Fox (also responsible for several of the band's previous videos), embarks on a similar journey via a slow-frame collage of quintessentially Australian landscapes — a mix of vintage postcard snaps and family holiday photos — reignited into life by thickly-applied acrylic paint additions. Above which the band and an undirected dancer are embedded within the same jittering frame-rate, adding even more colour to the background scenes and further accentuating the contrasting void between the brightly warm arrangement and the fragments of denunciation within the lyrics.

DOUBLE J - BEST NEW MUSIC

The new Shining Bird album Black Opal isn't going to be out for a few months yet. But after hearing 'Rivermouth' and now this beautiful Aussie anthem in the making 'Helluva Lot', we're ready for it to be one of the great records of the year.

ROLLING STONE - BEST NEW MUSIC

On new single "Helluva Lot", Leisure Coast heroes, Shining Bird embark on a voyage "from the Great Dividing Ranges, River Murray to the sea", attaching a wide-spanning, detailed soundscape to judgementally blunt lyrics ("my head, it keeps on spinning, while the ozone disappears"). The contrast displaces the surface level optimism of the composition, all hopeful hints punched down from the traditional tall poppy perch with economically precise, self-depreciating assessments: "we've got a helluva lot to lose".

"One of last year’s most magnificent singles was Shining Bird’s Rivermouth. With a vision that recalled the widescreen sweeping vistas of The Triffids, you kinda wondered if that one was just a fluke. Delightedly, it seems not. Helluva Lot (Spunk) has a helluva lot going for it. It’s the Murray River rather than the Swan that’s flowing by, but this has that shimmering heat haze and weight to it that denotes the most Australian of songs. This is a band that deserves to happen. And we probably need a song to replace GANGgajang’s Sounds Of Then."

'SONG OF THE YEAR' NOMINATION FBi SMAC AWARDS

Rivermouth named Best New Music on Double J.

"This is such a dense, brilliantly constructed piece of music from Austinmer band Shining Bird. It all starts off so casually, as if the song is just going to be some loose, 'dolewave' take on Australiana. But it ends up expanding into a sonic wonderland that paints such a wonderful picture of this little piece of our country. The strings, the synths, the booming drums and the simple guitar lines all combine to make it such an expansive piece of music."

CHANNEL V AUSTRALIA - RIVERMOUTH REVIEW

"The South Coast kings of dreamtime pop have emerged from the escarpment of Austinmer with yet another glittering single in 'Rivermouth'. As usual, they've found the perfect sonic balance between new wave and Nick Cave. Shining Bird continue to be one of the most truly unique Australian bands releasing music today."

SOUNDLY SOUNDS - RIVERMOUTH REVIEW

"The South Coast legends have become well-known for: a wide range of delicate instrumentation, immersive soundscapes, and, of course, the voice that’s broken a thousand hearts – the voice of one Dane Taylor. Jesus, every time he opens his mouth, you can hear the swish of heads turning and jaws hitting the floor. In a climate where Tony Abbott can enact the same policies as that of Nazi Germany, it’s nice to sit back and submerge yourself in some objectively beautiful music."

THE MUSIC.COM - RIVERMOUTH REVIEW

"Rivermouth is one of those emotive, spirit of place titles.. Dane Taylor has the young Leonard Cohen croon.. – and the band arch up, and manage to leave almost Triffids-like spaces among the occasionally widescreen music. The Shining Bird in question is apparently a magpie, which as we enter spring suggests you watch out for one of the buggers swooping down and surprising you, as much as the quality of this music might."
